We start with a photo I took recently for a product review. Overall I’m happy with the image. But there’s something that still bothers me. If you look closely you’ll see all kinds of dust and other imperfections. Real life is just full of microscopic things that a camera just loves to pick up.

So to fix this we’re going to use the Spot Healing Brush Tool. You’ll want to select a soft brush and set it to Content Aware. You’ll also want to set it to Sample All Layers, so you can create a new layer and have all your changes appear on that separate layer.

Using this tool is really simple. Just paint a dot over any imperfection and photoshop will use content aware technology to cover it up. As you can see this works amazingly well and doesn’t require much work. It even works on complex surfaces, such as this grill – as long as there’s some kind of repeating pattern to be followed.

I can work my way over the entire image, removing every imperfection. As you can imagine this tool is also useful for cleaning up other imperfect surfaces, like closeups of people’s skin.

Finally we can toggle the visibility of the layer we created and see just how much of a difference it’s made.

That’s it for this tutorial. If you enjoyed it please subscribe and click the like button – and I’ll see you next time!
